A Beginner’s Guide to Lube

A Beginner's Guide to Lube by Dr. Sunny Rodgers

Hello Newbie!

It’s always exciting to try something new. Thinking about a new experience or trying a product you’ve never used before can cause chills of anticipation.

But, since this is new territory, you may not know exactly where to start. I’m here to help!

In this article I’m going to guide you as a beginner to intimate lubricants. Take your time. Find what lubricant speaks to you and your needs. And then—go ahead and head over to the store to buy YOUR new lube!

I’ve Never Used Lube – Where Do I Start?

There’s a first time for everything, right? This is your first time to determine which personal lubricant will work for you and your needs. You’ve come to the right place.

#1. Do You Really Need Lube?

Quite simply, lubricants are designed to reduce friction and enhance intimate pleasure.

And research by the Indiana University’s Center for Sexual Health Promotion found the most common reasons for using lube are:

  • Lube makes sex more comfortable
  • Lube makes sex more fun
  • Lube helps to decrease sexual discomfort by making sex more pleasurable

So, yes, you should give lube a try.

#2. Consider the Basics

Are you allergic to any particular ingredients? Do you have sensitive skin?

Keep these considerations in mind as you’re on this journey.

#3. How Will You Be Using Your Lube?

If you’re looking for a versatile lubricant that is easy on skin, compatible with pleasure products and condoms, and has a gentle, natural feel—consider water-based lubricants.

Water-based lubricants have consistently held the largest share in the lube market. Many attribute this to their positive personality traits, such as their smooth consistency, which is similar to natural vaginal lubricant, and most are non-staining formulas.

#4. Do You Desire a Long-lasting Lube?

Because silicone lube has a thicker viscosity, less is needed. And because silicone lube can’t evaporate or dry out over time, it allows for longer sex play sessions without the need for reapplication.

Silicone lubricant is super slippery and minimally reactive—it can lubricate almost anything.

Silicone lubricant works especially well on porous items, such as plastic pleasure products, because it adds an additional element of slickness. It also works well with glass and metal. However, silicone lube may degrade sex toys made of silicone material, so they should not be recommended for use with those items.

It is also ideal for anal play since the rectum is not self-lubricating.

Speaking of which…

#5. Are You Thinking of Anal Play?

Because of silicone lubricant’s characteristics, it works extremely well for anal play. But, there are lubricants that are created specifically for anal play purposes.

Swiss Navy’s Premium Anal Lubricant is a silicone lubricant which has an extra, thoughtful, active ingredient—clove oil!

Clove oil has traditionally been used for a variety of purposes, including:

  • As an antimicrobial, to help kill bacteria, which is important since medical research has found this particularly helpful for those who participate in anal sex.
  • As a pain reliever for conditions such as muscle pain.

Clove oil is also a great natural remedy for moisturizing dry skin.

#6. Have You Considered Lube for Oral Play?

Flavored lubricants are great if oral play is on your agenda.

Flavored lube is created by adding ingredients to a lubricant formula in order to produce the sensation of taste.

The most common reasons for using a flavored lubricant are:

  • Add flavor to sexual activities.
  • Mask the taste of latex and body parts.
  • Add the element of food-play to sexual situations.

Swiss Navy has a number of flavored lubricant options, but I suggest you check out one of their newest brands, 4-in-1 Playful Flavors, which can provide you with four ways to enjoy them—for lubrication, massage, warming temperature play, and, of course, providing a delicious edible experience.

Continue to Experiment & Explore!

Are you excited to try your new lube? I’m excited for you. And I want to encourage you to continue to experiment and explore with intimate lubricants since new ingredients and combinations and formulas are fun to try.

According to research published by Science Daily, 70% of study participants reported that using lubricants made sex feel very pleasurable and more comfortable.

It’s healthy to explore your sexuality and try products that can give you better intimate experiences.
